Great record with an all star lineup. Excellent sound quality. Definitely a record worth owning for any jazz/Blakey fans.

Worth a listen, but Blakey at Birdland records are much better. The problem here is the horns, Mobley and Dorham. Neither of them could play hot, ever, but were always thrown into these contexts which is probably at led to some peoples' criticisms. I like Mobley and Dorham, but in the right setting for them. For Mobley, I think some of his finest moments are on Soul Station and Grant Green's I Want To Hold Your Hand. For Dorham, his own Cafe Bohemia set on Blue Note is much more suited to his style. The Lou Donaldson/Clifford Brown performance on the Birdland recordings are about 5 times more charismatic and electrifying, and Silver/Blakey feed off of that in a more noticeable way.

A big 5-starer! They call it the Definitive Reissue Series and with the 1st appearance of the Jazz Messengers on record, it is just that. Including a very fine pressing.
A seeker and a keeper. Highly recommended! And also Volume 2.

I picked up a 1st press mono of this record. Interestingly the back cover of the jacket has the "43 West 61st St., New York 23" with a blank spine. Its deep groove with the Lexington Ave address on the record label. There is no "R" below the "E" on the word Note. Anyone have a similar copy?
