I have a mispress! Side D of my copy is Side D of Phish's Rift: https://discogs.versitio.com/release/27771774-Phish-Rift
And of course it took me ages to listen to it and hear the mispress, so no returning... -
I'm baffled by anyone who thinks this release sounds good. The artifact-laden, heavy application of 'No Noise'-style filters make this almost a chore for me to listen to in places, in spite of how good the performances may be. You don't need a million-dollar system to hear what I mean either. Obviously since I haven't heard the source material in its pure form, it might be unfair to say this but: just leave the tape hiss intact, already. I thought this style of "restoration" went out of fashion at least a decade ago. This is the quickest I've resold an RSD release, and it wasn't a hard decision to make even though I lost money on it. (P.S. I was also able to get a booklet sent to me by the label, direct from Italy. Which is nice of them, I suppose.)

This is a fantastic release. 3LPs with great performances by Evans and amazing recording quality. Its a very nice sounding record for sure. Recommended!

Glad I bought this in Paris while on a biz trip since it seems the physical booklet was excluded entirely from the US market. Feels like a complete package with the physical booklet.

Listening now. Is this release mono? I see no mention of original analogue tapes. Is it digitally sourced? Thx. Lovely release anyhow. Genius.
-
Mixed feelings about this one - starting with the missing booklet (I did email and got one sent to me) and the lack of an outer sleeve (like previous Bill Evans RSD releases). Compared to the last few BE RSD releases, this one on first listen just sounds like it's lacking. There are some highlights here and there but overall this 3LP set feels a little lackluster and lifeless. I'm going to give it another chance - just compared to some of the other jazz RSD releases, this one was one of the most expensive and the least rewarding.
-
Agree with others that the orchestral suite is amazing. I'm a fan of this pressing. The booklet being digital is probably the only major gripe I have. The recording feels flat, but not in a digital way. I think with the acoustics of my space it really shines. I think pressings like this get grief for being such big releases, but I'd highly suggest this one. I think as time goes by this will become a more cherished album for me personally. I know disc 2/3 will be getting the most spins.
Worth the price, will hold up overtime, huge release for anyone into the more so cinematic element of Evan's music.
#3006 -
The gem is the symphonic side. Trio LPs are OK, but the recording isn't the best. The drums sound behind, with no clearness on the cymbals. The piano feels boring, and the bass is not very expressive...nothing like ASS pressings. For the price, this release is not a must. But if you're an Evans fan, you should get it.
pd. no booklet, mine is 2044/7550 -
Edited 2 years agoGreat music but the pressing quality is not enough satisfying.
Uncomfortable ticks and background noises comes up though when It was my fist playing.
