I believe this to be the last good U2 album. Moreover, whilst I've tried for years to enjoy Achtung Baby, this album grabbed me almost immediately. Whereas Achtung is widely considered among their best albums, Zooropa seems to occupy a lesser place. But to me, this album contains a greater number of really good, catchy songs, and seems to abandon a bit of the pretense of the former album.
Highlights for me are the rocking title track, Numb, Lemon (one of Bono's finest tributes to his mother), and Stay (a bit sappy, but I still like it). The album certainly runs out of steam over the final three or four tracks, but none of them are any worse or less interesting than most tracks on Achtung.
Unfortunately U2 could not (or would not) capitalize on the best parts of this album, and they'd return with the dreadful Pop. Things really went downhill from there.
