Acoustic Sounds produces another perfect pressing of a live gem. Shocker! The sound is so intimate; Coltrane sounds beautiful, Dolphy's playing is right there with you, Jones' drumming sounds so personal, and Tyner + Garrison have plenty of space that make this mix just sounds so full and wonderful.
-
Funny thing: the cover and the labels all say „Live at the Village Vanguard“, but the actual pressing is „Live at the Village Vanguard Again!“, both sides with Naima and My Favorite Things. Does anyone else has this?

I have both the 45 and 33rpm pressings of his album and run a very revealing system. They're pretty much identical to the point that I question sometimes spending more on some of my 45s which sound no better (sometimes even worse) than the well mastered and pressed 33s.

Edited one year agoQuite sad... There is a low level 60Hz hum throughout this record that is not present on my USA Original RVG mono pressing.
Maybe the tape used was a poor copy of the original master? Universal fire casualty? I can't believe RKS messed up the mastering on this one so badly... It must be a bad tape copy that was used.
The sleeve is very nice. But I doubt I will play this one ever again. -
Flat (no roller coaster cartridge here), great dynamics, good tone. Brilliant version of a genius record.

Perfect! Everything's perfect! Spiritual is probably my favourite Coltrane song. I can not recommend this reissue highly enough.

The inner spine of the gatefold sleeve had a tear in it when I first opened it. You have to be really careful when opening for the first time not to cause other tears. The same happened to my Acoustic Sounds copy of Crescent. My copy of A Love Supreme and the Duke Ellington/Coltrane record were fine though. But I've read about others having an issue with the inner spine. The pressing, at least, is brilliant. Wish their quality control was as good as the Tone Poet series.

Edited 2 years agoSounds great! Flat and dead silent. However why does the gatefold spine need to be so tightly bound. My copy ripped a bit when opening it for the first time and i was super careful. It was that stiff unfortunately. It’s too bad cause otherwise it’s a beautiful package.
