Sonny Clark – My Conception

Distortion on the trumpet on B3, right channel. Not a recording issue since it’s not apparent on Spotify.
Crackling on B2.

I got my copy for $19.99 used in a record store. When I took it out to inspect it, it looked like it had tiny cracks on the surface but weirdly when I brushed one it came off because they were just weird smudges. So I took it home, ran it through 3 stages of cleaning I do and to my absolute joy it came out perfect. I guess the shop thought it was damaged so sold it cheap.

Now to review. Wow!! I have many Sonny Clark records and while I enjoy them, he has never been one of my tops. But this record surprised the heck out of me!

Even used my copy was completely flat, absolutely BEAUTIFUL jacket that is heavy and glossy. Everything about the presentation just makes for a beautiful piece.

Now the sound. This thing is dynamic, incredibly clear (like I truely feel like I'm right there with the boys!), and just a beautiful line-up of music. Byrd and Mobley KILL with their trumpet and sax solos, some of the best out that (I'm a Mobley fan boy so no shocker here).

In conclusion I was reluctant to drop $40 on this. But because of my fortune finding it for 50% off, it is now going to be a reference record for me for the foreseeable future. 5/5 from me.

Pressing sounds amazing, mastering is perfect and great music, a must own.

My copy have a lot of clicks and loud pops...it's so sad :/

My first Tone Poet and got me hooked until quality has recently started to decline.

Just a beautiful release with an incredible soundstage. This is my second Tone Poet purchase behind John Coltrane's Blue Train 2LP stereo release, which is an outlier in this series. I am very happy with this purchase and bought it on sale, which saved me $10. Currently researching which Tone Poet I want to purchase next, which just might be Schofield/Metheny's 'I Can See Your House From Here'.

Superb sound, astonishing, awesome… spacious scenery, instrument separation. Great pressing

What I personally like about this excellent album is it features:Donald Byrd(trumpet),Hank Mobley(tenor sax),Paul Chambers(bass),Art Blakey(drums) & of course Mr Clark on piano,& it could be anyone of their album they all feature so prominently,full dynamics with great stereo separation,fine imaging alone with air & ambiance,five stars*****
