Zero 7 – Simple Things

A cleverly crafted, slick affair that takes equal steps in both directions (vocal and instrumental), doesn't owe allegiance to any one genre and reveals further production details with every repeated play (it ranked as 2001’s 53rd best-selling studio album released in that year, later reaching platinum status).

A mixed bag if truth be told.

The pressing quality is high, just like the HMV 1921 clear vinyl ive got. Flat and quiet (when cleaned). But the sound is unfortunately not upto the standard of the deluxe CD edition ive got which sounds cleaner, more expansive and more extended at both ends. But worst of all - and even using my most advanced microline stylus - the ends of sides have baked in distortion which does cause elements to break up here and there. The fuzzy guitar in the right channel of Out Of Town for example... not heard on digital versions at all.

I would be curious to see if the og vinyl was cut better because whoever cut these ones must have been inexperienced.... i mean its not like we are 25mins a side here!!

Covers without anti-static sleeves, enjoyable

Fantastic sounds fantastic pressing what has been said does not need to be repeated!

The approach of Zero 7 to downtempo, specifically to the Air's "Moon Safari" sound (but on other places it shows they were listening to 4hero, Cinematic Orchestra and long etc), was very much the copy, rearrange and paste one from the anime episode final emo song, and it works very well in here. Strings are well placed, keyboards sound perfectly tuned, vocalists express their guts out (Sia in particular) and the deja vu riffs (all over the place) can be taken as nice nods.

But however nice the collection of songs are, I still think they are better at their dubbiest. "Spinning Dub" is maybe the best tune of that era of their careers.

I would listen to this album on repeat while studying in college; man such lucid memories of how great this was for me as a background relaxer; 20 year later retuned back to it and still love it; Thank you Zero 7 for this musical jamboree of love, peace and tranquility. Total positive vibes!
