Notes
The 2nd album released by Bad Religion. The album features a keyboard-heavy prog rock sound which is unlike anything else in their discography. Bassist Jay Bentley quit the band during the recording of the first song and previous drummer Pete Finestone is also absent from the record. Epitaph Records pressed up 10,000 copies of the record which they claim were mostly returned by dissatisfied fans. The returns were stored in the Bomp Records warehouse where Brett Gurewitz's then-girlfriend worked and a number of copies were sold through Bomp, although just how many is disputed. These sales were not authorized by the band or label. Jay Bentley also stated that he and Brett destroyed several boxes of the record and other copies that had been stored in Bentley's mother's basement were ruined by an exploding water heater.
The record has been mostly disowned by the group. Brett Gurewitz, who owns the rights to the record via Epitaph Records, has been particularly vocal about his displeasure with album and long refused to reissue the release. However, the first authorized reissue was included in the Bad Religion vinyl box set released in the fall of 2010.
The song "Time And Disregard" was originally written for a side project that Greg Graffin had with Greg Hetson (who was not a member of Bad Religion at this time) called Greg Greg.

I do love this album !
Just try to listen to it without expecting their usual sound.
It was criticized for being a prog rock album, I don't agree because it is fresh and catchy. -

It’s a very good album in its own right. Obviously, it’s hard to weigh it versus anything else in their discography because it’s such an outlier, but think of it as a side project as opposed to comparing it to, say, Against the Grain and there’s plenty here to like. The keyboards were quickly banished, but the harmony vocals stuck around. I’ll agree with another reviewer that TSOL did this sort of thing better on Beneath the Shadows, but this ain’t half bad. -

This record is fantastic. This and HOW CAN HELL BE ANY WORST are the yin and yang of Bad Religion. Love them both. -

I’ve been a fan of BR since No Control - Against The Grain era. I have debated buying this over the years. To those who love it, I’m sorry but No Control is the best BR album, from opening kick drum to the final strums. This is experimental. The Manhattan Project had quite a few experiments before ‘success.’ Now TSOLs Beneath The Shadows deserves a decent New Wave experiment argument. -

Be careful guys, there's a lot of people in the marketplace claiming that they are selling a mint original press when it could possibly be the bootleg (Bad Religion - Into The Unknown) from 2018.
The concerning part is a lot of them are putting a tag on these for $200, so triple check who is selling it so you make sure you're not getting ripped off! -

They never made an official CD release of this? Why does this band pretend that their best album ever doesn't exist? It's a shame, because it's the only one of their CDs that I'd actually buy. They don't even have it available as a digital . I guess they don't want my money. -
Edited 5 years agoThis record sounds rough. I dont know if thats because its a low budget punk recording from the 1980s or because its a subpar bootleg. Ive never listened to an official pressing so I cant compare. And make no mistake, this version is a bootleg as the credits on the back cover lists "Greg Guerewitz" as a producer when it should be "Brett Guerewitz". It's also far shinier than a normal record jacket (kind of like the bright and reflective coloring you'd expect from the cover of a spiral notebook).
It is very much listenable, esp if your ear is used to old, cheaply recorded, low-fi punk rock. And unfortunately, unless you're planning on dropping triple digits for an original pressing or trying to hunt down the 30th anniversary Bad Religion box set (that included the only repressing of this LP [in clear red] limited to 3000 copies), this is the only way you're going to get a copy of this. -

Where did the official release go? Why isn't it listed anymore?
