Is there truely any alternative to Discogs?
Isn't it time the hundreds of people who care do something for themselves.
I would love the idea that something to compete with discogs was being set up.Something with integrity and accuracy.
I'm not ready to the guys in oggercide just yet but would be willing to at least load the gun if I saw a brighter light.

the longer v4 runs the more alternatives will become apparent.
not because they are new alternatives, but because discogs has plummeted below their level.

It just burns me up to think that we had what seemed to be a mutually useful system for collectors/archivists and the like whose main interest was having a common site to facilitate the indexing of their music collections AND marketplace s who use the site primarily or exclusively to sell music. I've said before -- maybe I'm missing something, but I really don't see how the changes made in v4 are an improvement for EITHER type of . In v3, s could still sell "unmoderated" items, no matter how crappy their entries were. I could even have seen them simply removing the ability for mods to remove bad entries via "No" votes (so sellers wouldn't complain about having their incomplete subs removed when they were trying to sell them) but getting rid of the central queue and making all edits live with no prior modding is just daft. I'm feeling overwhelmed and not very motivated right now. :-(

azzurro -- sorry if i made too much of a public show of your opinion, but i'm really feeling the same way right now. i worked hard to earn mod rights because this site was one of the rate online resources in its effort to balance the quality and quantity of data being submitted, with the emphasis on quality.

i really wonder what benefits there are to this new version for the site s.

Thanks for listing me....for those who can't access the (ex-)mods forum, there are dozens more to add to that list...in fact its pretty much universal, and there is a growing call for a reversion to the point, on 9th March, where some sort of sanity prevailed.

nik's comments you can feel that he's having trouble defending the indefensible..they are very half hearted at best. I'm pretty sure he knows V.4 is a disaster zone and one would hope he is expressing that behind the scenes to Kevin.

I'm seriously thinking of comitting oggercide, but I don't think I have the courage yet. I've invested so much time and work in this site, surely not as much as many of you, and now that V4 is live, I can only feel that it's all been wasted.

When this was announced one month ago, it was like receiving a punch in the face from a near friend. Although I knew it would happen sooner or later, I was quite taken aback. All s would be thrown out the door like garbage with no due respect to our voluntary work. That's why I had to leave the mod team.

Now that obviously all V4 functions are up and running I have lost hope that it finally turns into something that is still giving me a similar level of statisfaction compared to what we were doing before.
What really disappoints me is the fact that the communication between was effectively destroyed (on purpose?). This is not a community anymore besides in the forums/groups but no longer on the main topic: the subs. Until I can see what happens on my subs again, who comments/votes, until I can discuss or even fight again about it in a manner that I was used to I am not going to contribute more than just taking a minimal bit of care of the subs in the DB from me already. It was only three month that I was part of this project but it was fun. I really had not seen it coming like this....too bad, but I have other things to do that I even get paid for and which are also fun. So see you once in a while and have fun (elsewhere).

My respect to all the above mentioned lost mods, all current mods and frustrated , who cared about quality.

Hmm...where do I start. When I first checked Discogs many many moons ago, I subbed a Mariah Carey record for a laugh (this one). Then I got a couple more, and realised they weren't in yet, so I subbed a few more. And a few more. And before I knew it, I was actually setting time aside in my personal life so that I could submit my records and CD's and have a central hub where everyone could access them.

My other thing was that I kept seeing requests on a message board I visit everyday, for tracklistings of latest Promos and older records. They usually went along the lines of: "Was the Thunderpuss Hands In The Air Mix of Madge - Don't Tell Me ever released on CD?" etc etc. And so the more we built up the database, the more I could direct people onto OUR Database. Then as we matured from v.1 it was clear we were REALLY getting somewhere. We had crazy accurate credits, I was finding out so much about the music I loved, and clicking a few links helped me discover so much more.

I built up relationships with other subbers to ensure that we could get the latest Pop/Dance promos in asap so that everyone could see the mailouts to DJ's. I worked with Michael Jackson and Madonna collectors to try and get as much rare stuff in as possible; I'm a huge MJ fan and some of the stuff I was seeing made my eyes pop out. Rare mixes were now available, etc etc. It was getting really good. I also started helping to build new Remixer/producer profile pages. I got emails and MySpace messages from Hani and Jody Den Broeder thanking me for adding all this stuff.

Then we got the clusterfuck that is v3.0 and everything started going downhill. It became clear that we were moving into an era of Discogs that was not beneficial for anything other the wallets of the 3 people who earn money from this site. Management built up a hierarchy and aura of "I'm better than you", and nothing - not a single thing was listened to from the moderaters side. I know it's easy for casual subbers to come here and see things and say "well the mods are overreacting and management are acting in the best interests of everyone." But for those of you who weren't privvy to the Mod forums, we begged and pleaded. Almost on a daily basis, both for changes to make it better for subbers and mods alike, and also to not damage OUR site. For those of you who are still wondering what happened when we posed ALL of these questions to management regarding the issues that were occuring - this was the result. A banning of a long-standing mod, for daring to disagree with the changes that were ruining OUR database.

It's truly horrifying to see all your hard work over a good few years undone within hours, at a click of a button. All that time and effort not just for me, but for everyone who contributed to this site - all gone. I know some of you are reading this and are thinking "wow - this dude needs to get a life". But when you spend time away from your family, friends, even take up your holiday time to devote to helping build an online DB, it's really heartbreaking to see someone not only have the power, but actually use it, to destroy it.

The DB gives NO useful information on latest releases because the information entered is a load of shite. Most of the hardcore subbers don't bother anymore, cos you go to enter something, only to realise some twat has gone in and entered a websub from an .nfo file he ed on a Scene Release (and has done it WRONG). We were on the brink of something really good, and it's all gone.

teo - I hope all that $$$ was worth it. I would request a reponse on this thread to the numerous long-standing who have left (willingly or not). But you have both long mastered the skill of avoiding the difficult questions posed to you, and/or give deliberately vague answers that ultimately amount to nothing. Totally pathetic.

Well, - I've only been around for three months plus. Actively submitting (185 releases, plus profiles, images and comments) since January 1st, and my only concern is, that my submissions will/could be corrupted, when I leave. Surely, there's no fun left here. All respect SC725 - but one doesn't have to be a Discogs "old-boys", to get frustrated about V4.

Anybody starting a parallel Discogs with greater concern for data quality - look me up, please.

Just a thought : A lot of fellow s talks about "fake hips" - moderating and posting with one-self so to speak. Nobody knowing teo ?

I've seen no evidence that could disprove this. They very well may be one and the same. Does that really change anything though? It just makes the good cop/bad cop scenario even more amusing because the cops are one and the same.

people here have put several years (in some cases) of their own time to make sure the subs are correct. This new version anyone can come along and change a sub to anything they like. The changes go live straight away

It sits waiting for a vote but in V3 you had to wait for a mod to OK it before it went live.

I think that's the main grevience people have.

We are *absolutely* scared of and saddened/angered by v4! The functions that used to facilitate the checking of data prior to it going live have been removed, and already we've seen dozens and dozens of cases of faulty submissions going into a number of the more closely monitored artist & label pages. One can only imagine how many hasty submissions are popping up in more obscure corners of the site.

I'm inclined to say that you are a bit naive if you don't grasp that these updates have imperiled the integrity of this website and the accurate data that so many of us have put so much time and effort into submitting. Can you describe any real benefit these new changes have offered?

I understand that nik can only do and respond to so much, but I find it really distressing that there hasn't been any kind of "State Of v4 Address" or response from them, considering the large number of concerns that have been raised over the past few days since the change.

I'm not trying to foment...in fact, I've historically been very quiet on the boards, but this update seems to offer nothing for those of us who have worked so hard to maintain the accuracy & integrity of data, and only limited benefit to marketplace sellers -- as I see it, the only real bonus for them is being able to "get away with" having crappy subs in the database for longer because they are harder to track down and vote against.

I am open to the possibility that more changes could shape this new system into something workable, but not without a serious re-thinking of the voting system and the return of many of the functions that made voting / modding more easy. Certainly, it seems that finding a way to incorporate rank points is a very hot topic, as well.

Hard not to be edgy with no response yet from management.

First was rejected by mod only because he wanted to prove he is an God here ... He tried to train me like a puppy and did a lot to make me banned only because I've proved he wasn't right ... I'm happy he will not reject any of my sub anymore only bec ause I blocked him (Well he wrote that few times as a reason). I'm trully happy about that.... Every weekend when he was logging in my horror started. Only because he wasn't right so he did my life here very very complicated with some help of the others ... so don't say everything was so great here. I don't say every mod was like this ... many of you were really friendly and really helpful.... but 2 or 3 of you were just kids who got powerful toy in their hands...

  • Show this post
yes he said when collaborations released 2 titles they are listed as one artist but guidelines says about 3 and more releases so I was right ....

mods did subs without seeing release (sub with fiction credits or ghost artists) another mods accepted such a sub and Discogs showed releases with lots of errors... it was "kind of mafia behaviour" in my opinion.

A one off incident, without hearing the other side hardly qualifies as a indicative of a benefit in V.4. As Haze said you had access to a SCR....did you file one? If not, you have no real comeback or reason for complaint.

As well read few lines above... I don't look for the justice .... I'm happy about v4, and what I wrote was an example why.

Maybe it's bla bla bla, maybe I'm silly or whatever but look at you, crying instead of thinking about the future. Don't like it here? Do someone force you to be here? I don't think so. Take deep breath, stop treating yourselves like Gods, impossible to replace, and working so hard etc etc.... Not only mods were working hard here.

Actually it's a first friday since Schiller's submission I don't have few "no reason" N-Votes. So I'm more happy about v4.

That's all ... I don't need any further answers on this one. I'm not everyday guest on Help Forums which has turned into Lament Forums ... and why it's happen? Mostly because you have lost control ... not because you really care about quality... My advice is - just stop it and give v4 real chance! Good luck in new reality!

Really that's it? That's your response. You post a bunch of accusations against a bunch of people who have worked extraordinarily hard over the years to maintain the integrity of the database. Unable to back any of them you toss in a few more unable accusations. If that is the way you react in a discussion forum, its no wonder that others had a problem with you.

Once again, there is a procedure to deal with this (or there was) called an SCR...if you didn't file one then you really should not be complaining.

But you are right about one thing, it is about the loss of control...but not about the mods losing control, but rather the tossing away of any control over the integrity of the database and that effects everyone.

    As noiseUPnorth rather correctly says:
Besides liking V4, I think you have other issues as well.

vice versa quisquilia! U must be really good one ... I'm happy not every mod/ share your feelings. Just a few people and u if someone betrayed Discogs it's you with your childish topic, not management. I don't believe management want any thing wrong for this comunity. But I'm gonna repeat I'm happy the situation I was writting above not gonna happen! and one more thing... This is HELP FORUM and this topic doesn't help. Wanted to read about new rules etc. that's why went here and instead of help I saw this nonsense. And u all wrote about hard work... I don't say everyone did that but most of u were just points hunters and if someone lost motivation - it were regular s, having 6 months unmoderated subs, because mods were busy with subs from other mods, accepting each others subs and hunting for the points.

Strange I have never seen you all working (moderating) any of my subs - the people who were really working before they will do further because if they were here for the idea they will stay, but if someone wanted having control over the other people he just lost it and he is upset...

It's a nonsense... I supposed to learn about new v4, I'm writing here, and because I wrote something different I'm a troll. Wonderful comunity people. Someone gets kicked only because different opinion....

And final proof if proof were needed that you either havent the slightest idea what you're blathering on about or here to deliberately cause ructions.

Most people here were not 'points hunters' at all - simply because since v3 points didnt MEAN anything.

And since v3 regular s didnt NEED to worry about submission waiting times.

Since your Mr Chatty, answer this for me - what, under discogs v3, could you not do while your submission was pending? You could add it to your collection, wantslist, sales, rate it, edit it etc etc. What is it you couldnt do that your so glad to have v4? (though its very obvious you're not and really just a troublemaker)

    z-music
because mods were busy with subs from other mods, accepting each others subs and hunting for the points.

Clueless...utterly and totally clueless. NOTHING of the sort occured. Mods did vote on other mods submission yes, but not as a conscious effort to the detriment of other s. The very idea that mods even cared so much about rankpoints that they would engage in mutual back-scratching simply so they can have a bigger number on their profile is laughable.

Same old conspiracy theories from people who know NOTHING. Go back to what you're good at - insulting people in polish in submission comments. Its a damn shame that perfectly good mods and long-term s leave and people like you stay.
