Edited 8 months agoI don’t care what anyone else thinks, I love this pressing. I just found a great sounding original - a true VG+ - for $25, and it has a lot of sentimental value to me. Sure, it’s never been the best sounding album, but that’s not the point: the MUSIC defined the mid 1960’s, and it’s one of the most important albums of all time! For what it’s worth, it still might be best to seek out the Carl & P’s 1974 pressing, or a true mint copy of the Analouge Productions. Either way, sit back and enjoy the magic of the Boys’ true classic.

This is a good pressing of the album. The album is good and also strange at times. Don't mind listening to it on a good day.

Edited one year agoThe Hoffman forum consensus on the US Capitol pressings of Pet Sounds is… wrong and right. The mastering did lop off a bunch of high end, so if you want to leave your settings flat it does sound a bit lifeless. That said, my sixties valve Hi Fi amp (rogers cadet) has treble and bass dials, and with those turned up a bit it really comes to life. It’s not very purist, but it’s how it was intended to be heard - on a sixties set up with eq controls.
The bottom end in particular is really full in a way it isn’t on the ‘72 Carl and The ions pressing, it’s like that tone dial only applies to the bass instruments, so you can crank it all the way up without things getting mushy. With the same level of cranking on the 72 mastering, it gets mushy, and there simply isn’t the same level of bottom available, like they ran it through a hard curve high filter rather than reducing the bottom end.
Not saying this is the most hi fi pressing in the world, but it does sound very ‘sixties’. My go to copy now for sure. -

Edited 4 years agoCan anyone tell me if this pressing had the "capitol sounds great in '66" orange promo insert ? Or it had the 'light olive green' Capitol promo insert ?
