Was pleasantly surprised with this, my copy is VG+ and sounds dead quiet, virtually no noise on it. Drums sound great!

For a debut, this is faultless, there isn't a bad track on it. The rhythms on this aligned with the punchy horns and occasional sweeping strings are all soul. For the love of Motown. This man's rhythmic prowess is just glorious. We are introduced to rhythms from all over: rock, soul, blues, jazz, funk, Brazil, and the psychedelic. I loved you then, I love you now. Cheers Phil, you da man. xx

Regardless of whether you like Phil Collins' music overall or not, it cannot be denied that this is a brilliant debut album. It was a big hit at the time, and after all these years retains its qualities, remaining Phil's best and most timeless work in my opinion.

Mostly inspired by his first divorce and subsequent romance with wife-#2-to-be Jill Tavelman, the honesty and truth in the lyrics makes the breakup songs like 'You Know What I Mean', 'If Leaving Me Is Easy' and 'I Missed Again' more effective, and stops them becoming too corny. There really isn't a bad song on the album, and the instrumentals 'Droned' and the brilliant 'Hand in Hand' provide a nice alternative to the songs about relationships.

The production by Collins and Hugh Padgham is timeless, and has a great sonic quality. While Collins would overuse the drum machine somewhat in later years, on this album it was put to perfect use such as helping to create the dark atmosphere of 'In The Air Tonight' that makes the song the classic that it is.

It is mainly represented in history by 'In The Air Tonight', and the classic status of that one number has prevented Face Value from becoming better known as a consistent, timeless album. While Phil made a number of great albums, none were as well-made or creative as this.

If anyone bashes Phil Collins, get them to listen to this.

New picture disc coming in February 2021 of Face Value but sadly they will be using the updated reissue cover again, not original. Will that ever be used again?
