Just beautiful in every way. I was slightly skeptical of it in 1991, when I first saw the video for "Daydreaming" on "Yo! MTV Raps" and thought "these British emcess are barely even awake, I'm not sure I get this"—but soon I learned to love it. And I have ever since. At the time, just a lovely, soupy coming-together of races, genres, styles. In hindsight, it both feels and sounds like a logical extension of where the 1980s were headed, and yet it's impossible to dispute how fresh and novel it actually was. You can hear bits of dub reggae, smooth contemporary R&B, echoes of mid-80s NYC hip hop, soul, "Buffalo Stance", and even the youthfully swaggering strut of The Specials.
