I had to go back and check out some edited versions of classic hip-hop albums, because since a youth the censored hip-hop tape has always been a comedic oddity.
"Straight Outta Compton" far from dissapoints here . You can tell the World's Most Dangerous Group did not want to record this way before Eazy says he's "outta here" on "8 Ball". The re-write's are so hilarious, taking the venom and sting out of everything featured on the original record. I don't know how Cube did it - but the sheer existence of this record is a testament to that MC's pen (see : "Dopeman" turned from a glorification record into a PSA or the classic "I Aint Tha 1" - raw without even one expletive in sight) . And as for Dre letting some of the samples out of their loop as in on "8 Ball" or on "Something Like That" where MC Ren vocalizes how one of the samples at the end started late as oppossed to the original cut, moments like these make this version of "Straight Outta Compton" far from seminal, but still worth a listen, at least for a good laugh or two.
