Drums kinda mellowed. Nevertheless, loved the mastering. Good guitar presence. David’s voice was clear and centre. Good copy. Van Halen is slowly becoming my go to listening. Happy to have this.

Edited 3 years agoI'm reviewing a second copy.
This is Van Halen's 5th studio album. Every time we thought we had them figured out, they would take a left turn and surprise us. Here is an album that was decidedly lighter in tone than Fair Warning, chock full of covers (Kinks, Martha, Orbison, etc) and some tin pan alley and other sounds. I when this came out, fans labeled it gimmicky. In retrospect, it's a beautifully conceived array of seemingly unrelated songs, just right for cleansing the palate for what was to come.
Although Eddie has his instrumental features on here, the actual placement of his guitar solos in the songs is less prominent. Likewise, his solos are less wild than the crazy stunt playing on VH1 and Fair Warning. Similarly, Alex's drums are somewhat neutered throughout, a big change from some serious skin pounding on earlier releases.
Highlights include "Pretty Woman", "Good Times Gone", "Cathedral", "Full Bug(THIS is the VH you've come to love, BTW), and the lovable "Big Bad Bill".
The album is mixed less aggressively with a more smooth commercial sound.
This early pressing sounds absolutely amazing. 3-dimensional, nice attack, and great dynamics.
Recommended.
