Finally got hold of a copy of this, so wanted to list some brief thoughts and comparisons to two other versions that I own - a 1989 "Made in West " DMM pressing, and a 2014 "Peach" Ace Records reissue.

As many others have noted about this record, it was never recorded fantastically well so if you are expecting an audiophile-quality version, you'll be disappointed. However, I can say that this UK OG is my favourite sounding version that I've heard.

In isolation, the Peach reissue is a fine version and will satisfy most listeners. It has decent crisp highs, and the bass has been cranked up a few notches.

The West German '89 version has even bigger bass, I presume due to the DMM process, but it is too much for me. It overpowers other instruments. The highs can also sound a bit harsh, for example the cymbal sounds are quite tinny.

The UK OG has the tamer bass, but it feels more balanced overall. I find this version more pleasant to listen to, particularly the vocals which have a pleasing warmth to them - for example, the female voices on Can You Get To That sound lovely here.

Given the prices these OG copies are going for, and the poor condition most will be in, it's hard to recommend this over the 2014 reissue but I will say that if you do get hold of one, you'll be pleased albeit not blown away.

Finally found a UK first press. It sounds alright. Strangely enough it sounds like Can You Get To That was cut a little fast as it sounds slightly quicker than the digital version. Not sure how it compares to a US first press but I've got one on the way so I'll be able to do a side by side comparison. Getting a clean copy of this is necessary so there aren't any distractions on Maggott Brain. Mine has a few clicks but is nonetheless listenable. Love this album. Sleeve feels quite flimsy but the laminate is nice.

This Janus UK press of 'Maggot Brain' sunk without trace on initial release.
No one in the UK was interested in Funkadelic in 1971...
