From website description:

"The Dude" is mastered direct-to-DSD by Kevin Gray at CoHEARent Audio from the Original Analog Master Tapes, which were acquired from Quincy's team by Marshall Blonstein of Audio Fidelity...

Quincy Jones "The Dude" appears on Intervention Records solely due to the generosity of Marshall Blonstein of Audio Fidelity. Marshall blazed a bright, inspiring trail for labels like IR for many years with his brands, Dunhill Compact Classics (DCC) and Audio Fidelity.

When Audio Fidelity closed its doors in 2018 "The Dude" was already mastered by Kevin Gray and the DSD files were in the can with nowhere to go. Kevin acted as a facilitator, connecting IR with Marshall, who provided the mastered DSD files for this release.

An improvement over modern vinyl trusses - bass is certainly a lot more clean & prominent. Nothing groundbreaking here, but I can only guess masters are either long gone, or poor copies of the original.

Found a Pioneer DVD player that can also play SACD's. My first time listening to an SACD/DSD64. It sounds very good, but i am likely hearing the stellar Kevin Gray mastering moreso than the DSD tech involved. Anyone want to weigh in on this?

Also--What tape source was used? The OG production master or a copy of it? (even a 1st gen production master is itself one generation away from the OG song mixdown tapes)

The mix of “Razzamatazz” here has much more upfront background vocals. (Only noticed this because it’s one of my favorite albums and I know every inch of it)

Also--this remaster would have been the perfect opportunity to swap out the edited LP versions of "Betcha wouldn't hurt Me" & "Razaamatazz" for the full versions that were released on 12".

Really nice clarity on this release, but honestly only a marginal improvement over previous releases. After comparing the SACD with both the early West German for US press and the early Japan for US press, I'd say that the cold clarity of the new releases lacks some of the soft warmth of the early releases - which can be had for much cheaper. Those early releases would have my recommendation over the new SACD - even though I usually think Kevin Gray's work is incredible!
