While I try my best to work through it, Steve Grossman’s sax playing nearly ruins this record for me. Both his tone and style is way off. No feeling, just frantic and tinny sounding. I’m surprised Miles put up with it.

Bassist is incorrectly listed as Michael Henderson on the Master Release. Dave Holland was the bassist on this recording.

The problem is Chick Corea, his superficial play cannot keep up with the deepness of the group.

Anon. 1981, p. xxii: "Michael Cuscuna says Dave Holland has confirmed that he — not Michael Henderson — is the bassist on Miles Davis's 'Black Beauty' album (CBS/Sony SOPJ-39/40), recorded at Fillmore West in San Francisco."

Finally got my hands on this LP. Love the performance. But I'm also surprised at how quiet the track is on the LP. On disc 2 side 1, for example, I found myself turning my speakers all the way up and still wanting more. I was able to crank my preamp all the way to +10dB (without any clipping) and that gave me enough headroom. But it's definitely a low level recording. Cranking all that up also cranks the surface noise.

                Is this others' experience?
