Some amazing break work from Squarepusher, and definitely some of his most interesting material. The title track is by far the standout, and though it's 11 minutes, it doesn't feel that long! The extremely sad intro leads into some amazingly intricate chopped breakbeats, and he even treats us to a brief bass solo. The other tracks are pretty good too (with the exception of "Male Pill" which, pun intended, is hard to swallow).
It's also worth noting that "213 (Maritime.epsosis)" is the most thought-provoking song I've ever heard. Have you ever heard someone asking for a fiver, and thought to yourself "hmmm... 213..." -

Edited 18 years agoJust a note to anyone curious as to what the two tracks not on Burningn'n Tree: 213(Maritime.epsosis) and Spymania Theme. 213 is just Squarepusher saying "Can anyone lend me a fiver?" really slowly. Like 5 seconds long. Spymania Theme is just a quick bass thing that lasts about 5 seconds too.

Good stuff to have on vinyl if you can find it. All tracks were later stripped of their titles and compiled along with other early Spymania works in the Warp re-issue of sorts, BURNINGN'N TREE (which added three unreleased cuts too). Not a ton of melody but enough to keep listening to all drums and sounds. Not a lot (if any?) live bass playing on this album.
