Edited 6 months agoIn 2003, Andy Smith followed up his ground-breaking "Document" mix with a longer, more diverse set that saw him move away from the cinematic moodiness of the Portishead trip hop scene he emerged from. This second Document is a much more upbeat set for lifting the mood and dancing to, with less of a focus on turntablism, although there's still some brilliant cutting up of Black Sheep.
As before, Andy starts with his own hip hop mash-up, blending Akbar's catchy "Hot Ya Hot" rap with uptempo hip hop beats (Craig G's "Welcome 2 The Game") and upbeat funk (James Brown's "Lowdown Popcorn"), followed by a big shift in style to rawkus funk-rock (Three Dog Night's "I Can Hear You Calling") and another upbeat Otis Redding cover (this time Patti Drew's excellent "Hard To Handle").
However, Andy packs in a lot more records from a more diverse range of genres than before: more of his usual breaks (DJ Bombjack, Cut Chemist, Martin Brew, and Andy's own Dynamo Productions), hip hop (Eric B & Rakim, Black Sheep, Ultramagnetic MCs, Mr Lif), funk (Quantic Soul Orchestra, Sugarman 3, Barbara Randolph, Boca 45) and soul (Georgie Fame), but also styles that didn't make the first Document: psychedelic rock (a cover of Hendrix's "Fire"), boogaloo (Roy Lee Johnson), '70s pop (a cover of Bacharach's "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", Kate Bush) and northern soul (Barbara Acklin).
The songs are perhaps not quite as strong as on the first Document, but the excellent set-sequencing, mixing, turntablism and eclecticism make this a very worthy sequel. (9)
