Edited 7 months agoIn 1988, Coldcut's Matt Black and Jonathan More began their award-winning Solid Steel radio show that boasted "The Broadest Beats in London." In 2001, to celebrate the show and mark the 10th anniversary of their Ninja Tune record label, long-time Solid Steel contributors DJ Food (Patrick Carpenter & Kevin Foakes) and DK (Daren Knott) released the first of an eight part mix series. 16 months in the making, their resulting "Now, Listen!" mix is a landmark in the history of the DJ mix.
A mix of two halves, the first is a party mix that includes bespoke mash-ups, with Jeru The Damaja Coming Clean to downtempo Cinematic Orchestra (a blend reminiscent of Andy Smith's 1998 "The Document" mix), Motion Man terrorising Mr Scruff's quirky "Ug", and a brilliant drum 'n' bass reworking of The Beat's "Mirror In The Bathroom".
The second half provides a stark contrast to the first, switching mood and pace with an experimental ambience (Four Tet, Herbie Hancock, Link) that is reminiscent of Coldcut's "70 Minutes Of Madness" mix. It's very slow and esoteric, but ends strongly with the more recognisable chill-out of Art Of Noise's "Moments in Love" and Faze-O's classic "Riding High". Food for the soul indeed. (9) -
Edited 20 years agoOne of the best "legit" mixes still out there. This Solid Steel multi-studio mashup captures the same name radio stations ecclectic (..often overused word i know ...but appropiate here) style..
