The Heath Brothers are Jazz royalty and this 1990 German CD of the 1975 recording made in Oslo, Norway of all places, goes for silly money - though multiple reissues have brought the vinyl price down. You might be surprised by the very gentle mood throughout with Flute-lead titles dominating the first half. I guess most people want it for the breakbeat classic Smilin' Billy Suite Part II with the distinct Mbira sound of Stanley Cowell which was used by (amongst others) Cypress Hill (Hits From the Bong, T-Ray Mix, 1993), Nas (One Love, 1994), The Beatnuts (Ya Don't Stop,1994) Redman (Soopaman Luva 3, 1996), Dr Dre / Jheryl Lockhart (Do 4 Love, 1996), Cypress Hill (Roll It Up, Light It Up, Smoke It Up, 1996), The Undewolves (Lay Down, 2001).
That break is the reason why the disc is so expensive and why it has seen so many vinyl reissues. While the theme gets reworked in the other parts of the Suite, do not expect another track of similar caliber on here. If you are only after the break you might want to track down an 1076 Strata-East OG if you are loaded or settle for one of the various compilations or vinyl reissues that feature it before shelling out for the Bellaphone CD from 1990 or the Japanese Bomba CD released in 1995 and reissued in 2003.
