'All That You Can't Leave Behind' & 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' didn't impress me all that much. On those discs U2 sounded to me like a band that just wanted to sell as many albums as possible-which is what didn't appeal to me about-'No Line On The Horizon.' The album seemed to consist of a couple of easy airplay bets and little else. The trademark fragmented yet cohesive guitar solos by The Edge were not all that evident on the disc which was perhaps the most boring record I've ever heard from any "big rock act." This is a band that I have had plenty of opportunities to see live but I never went to see them for one reason or another-usually due to high ticket prices. They actually played not far from me on their last tour-the 'No Line On The Horizon' tour-and even though they were several km's away, the band was so loud for several nights in a row in an outdoor venue beside a residential neighbourhood that they made watching TV indoors when they were playing a complete waste of time. At 80 dollars a pop for a ticket for that show, staying in and watching TV was the more appealing option. They of course made it so that you could not do that if you were within three miles of the shows outdoors venue. To me some of U2's earlier material in the past has suffered from an aura of 'contrived drama'... and I think that is something the band has tried to remedy-usually by making more records-like this one-records that many people will buy out of a sense of loyalty (usually for being around from the beginning of the bands career)-then listen to once, and proceed to put away somewhere to be forgoten.
