I do like these RSD blues 78 reproductions from Traffic Entertainment Group and this is another nice release in the series – good packaging and a decent sound, despite the unnecessary gimmick of playing at 78rpm. Without owning the original 78s, I’ve found nothing quite beats the sound you can find on compilation LPs from the late 50s and 60s. In the case of Blind Willie’s signature tune, ‘Statesboro Blues’, the version on Samuel Charters’ The Country Blues LP remains the one for me although this particular release sounds as good as other recent reissues (Monk, Third Man etc). In conclusion, nice to have on the shelf but, ultimately, I’m not sure if the packaging or any particular advance in sound quality quite warrant the price (which was nearer £20 in the UK, for what is basically a 10” single).
