Edited 3 years agoYes, I was so excited to find this super clean copy of "Concierto", my 2nd favorite Jim Hall record, next to "The Bridge".
There is so much to love about this record: 1) the tune selection, 2) the players, which include Chet Baker, Paul Desmond and Ron Carter, 3)the decidedly mellow vibe, and not to mention 4) an epic looking cover. The only drawback is Jim's tone, which sounds like he possibly ran his ES-175 direct to board with no amp, and rolled off highs a little too much. Jim Hall is well known for having a gorgeous amplified tone, either through his d'Aquisto, or the Gibsons. No worries, his excellent playing makes up for this.
I feel like side A is a great lead up to the epic side B, "Concierto de Aranjuez". Sure Miles, MJQ, Chick, and others have dabbled with this piece, but this version really stands alone.
Give it a listen.
This pressing is excellent.
Recommended.
