McCoy Tyner – The Real McCoy

Elvin's drum tones and K Zildjian cymbal attack and wash is the real deal.

Not my favourite sounding Blue Note, lacking bass and cymbals sound terrible, maybe just my pressing. 🤔

As I haven’t heard the original pressing I can’t compare however I will say that for a piano driven album the piano is recessed and in my opinion the whole album lacks lustre, could be more vibrant and dynamic, your thoughts??

This 24-bit 192kHz remaster, coming 45 years after its debut, sounds very good, if not great. Being nit picky the clarity could be a bit better, and it sounds a little flat. Not to be too critical I'd rate the sound quality 95/100. Everything else is fine. I suspect that the original recording and tape was not the best, which makes me wonder why 24-bit 192kHz?? At least we know that this is likely as good as it's gonna get.

This japanese pressing sounds more balanced than the US Liberty pressing I have dating from -67. Almost sounds as if another mix was being used for the master.

My version matches this listing except for the inner-ring that appears in the picture. The labels and cover as well as original inner sleeve match exactly, and it does not have the serrated edge as described for another 1967 release: https://discogs.versitio.com/release/14119518-McCoy-Tyner-The-Real-McCoy. So, there may be some slight variations during this Liberty period and for this original. The music is fantastic, everyone's playing is top notch. It might not be RVG's best engineering in of capturing the sound and mastering (panning is noticeable, splash cymbal has a little of a phase effect esp. at the end of "Four By Five", and compression is tight, probably to make sure Joe Henderson's sax isn't lost in the mix), but this is one of my absolute favorite records, probably a personal Top-5 Blue Note for me.

For the money these Blue Note Classics are an audiophile bargain. This is another fantastic release.
The sleeve is a bit lower quality but, then, who listens to the sleeve ? The really important part is that the pressings are flat and quiet and the KG masterings are top tier.

My copy is completely flat, silent and the sound is incredible. Get it.
