Bob Dylan – Shadows In The Night

Incredible BULL!! Bought it ... and just two weeks later - after many tries - I kicked it out again heavily (as far as it had been possible)!!

This is definitely an audiophile recording. Al Schmitt recorded Dylan and band live to tape using vintage Neumann and various ribbon mics into Neve preamps at Capitol. Not sure if it was cut from tape at Sterling, but it doesn’t matter - it sounds so warm and vintage and perfect. After streaming this album repeatedly for many years, I decided to finally buy it on vinyl. I don’t know why I waited so long to buy it. Highly recommended (assuming you get a quiet copy like I got).

Holy moly, like Planet Waves this has a helluva warp which doesn’t majorly affect play but is very frustrating. Needless to say a 2015 replacement has been ordered!

Just to offer a counter viewpoint, I think this is a fantastic record. Beautifully recorded and arranged, wonderfully sung. A moving piece of art.

Does anyone know how many were made? Three more words.

I see people criticize this album. They have closed minds unfortunately. This is great music and I love this record. If it's got Bob Dylan's name on it, it's going to be good and it's going to be so good that you will not even realize how good it is until years later...maybe even not until on that sad, sad day that we lose Bob Dylan, as we will all . This is a beautiful record and it sounds amazing on vinyl through an old record player. This is actually pointing the way for me to explore some Sinatra stuff. I will say this, Bob Dylan is a great teacher, musical explorer, and genius.

People come to this record with the wrong frame of mind. As a late dylan album this is really weird. As a vintage, early period Tom Waits album this is awesome.

If you are a fan of Sinatra but not Dylan then you may be disappointed - This clearly isn't going to be to everyone's taste, but when has Dylan ever ticked that box? I'm not familiar with all these old Sinatra tunes, but I still quite enjoyed most of these renditions. It's all in a very melancholic style with very basic production; yes there's no great energy, but that all adds to the fairly intimate, tender atmosphere that results - it sounds like a pretty personal labour of love that he's sharing with the listener. It won't rank as one of the greatest Dylan albums, but there have been worse, and surely this is the greatest album ever by a 73 year old!

So many artists have covered Dylan throughout the years that it's nice to see him pay his respects to an artist (Frank Sinatra) that he ires. Might not be for everyone but a beautiful sounding record. If you've stuck with Dylan this long you'll find something here you'll like.
