Edited 4 months agoDisappointed with this mastering. Frank Merritt's The Carvery 2x45 rpm cut of Pieces Of A Man is pretty good so had expected better of this. The CD stream on Qobuz sounds better than this to my ears.
The sleeve and label has a catalogue number XXQLP 126 but the deadwax matrix number is HIQLP 023 (similar to the earlier BGP Finyl Tweek cut https://discogs.versitio.com/release/6186633-Gil-Scott-Heron-Free-Will) so I'm thinking something doesn't seem to quite add up here -

Great Album. Might have been lucky, but no noise at all on my copy. Pressing is ok. -
The drums sound really clear, the rest of the recording sounds like an FM radio. At least the pressing quality of this one is better than the other copy I had.

Greatness of the album isn’t in question here. Dropped a star only because it’s not the smoothest of mastering when compared to a Kevin Gray / RTI / AP pressing, but well worth the asking price. My pressing has a little bit of background noise but that could just be tape hiss. Only issue I can hear is in the first few bars of ‘Ghetto Blues’ where there is what I can only describe as a glitch that sounds like a digital artefact. Perhaps that is in the recording or just a pressing defect as it says AAA on the hype sticker. Matrix has The Carvery etched into it so this isn’t a bait and switch that we’ve been getting on some releases recently.

My copy sounds like a washing machine. Very noisy vinyl. -

My digital copy is in FLAC 16-bit 44.1 kHz format released by Qobuz -

The first side is in the same format as "Pieces of a Man" but in pure musical the songs aren't as strong as the previous album. The second half reverts to the spoken word format used on "Small Talk at 125th and Lenox." The lyrics are thoughtful and I guess the album is still interesting from a political/historical point of view to some people.
