Leiji Matsumoto – Interstella 5555 (The 5tory Of The 5ecret 5tar 5ystem)

Got this for $5 at a local record store but unless you're a massive fan i wouldn't recommend paying more than $5 for this Blu-ray, Terrible quality and very stretched.

Video is standard definition sourced, but better bit rate than the NTSC DVD. There are some frames on the DVD that get pretty blocky, especially in the rain, and these frames look less compressed on this Blu-ray.

Wanted to watch the DVD yesterday and it took me a while to get the disc our of the case holder.
Plastic became stiff over the years and pushing the center to release the disc didn't work anymore.
Had to use a pincer to break one of the holding teeth to release the disc!

Most people can probably skip this and just buy the DVD.

Maybe most importantly, if you live in an NTSC country and don't have a dedicated Blu-ray player for foreign discs, your player may just spit this out. It is not region locked, but the video is scanned at the PAL standard of 50 fields/sec, which many NTSC Blu-ray players are not set up to process. Go to the "discs that can be played" (or similar) section in your player's manual before you buy this and if it cannot handle 50 fields/sec video, it should say that. My Panasonic DMP-BD85 and my PC using VLC can play it, but my Sony BDP-N460 and BDP-SX1000 both cannot — so YMMV, but try to check.

The video transfer is worthless in Blu-ray ; I'm fairly sure it's just the DVD transfer recoded to AVC. There is no improvement in color depth, resolution, or scan type (i.e., this is still interlaced).

Audio-wise, there are stereo and 5.1 mixes and both are 48 kHz DTS-HD MA, compared to the DVD's 768 kbps DTS or 448 kbps Dolby Digital (5.1) or 192 kbps Dolby Digital (stereo). The 5.1 mix is similar or identical to the DVD's and nothing to write home about; your rear speakers will play some SFX but for the most part that's it. I do select it over the stereo mix if I'm watching on my home system, but I wouldn't make a point of waiting to use that system just to hear it.

The biggest positive for me is that the stereo mix has noticeably more dynamic range than Discovery on CD or streaming services. Since the movie has no dialogue and almost no SFX and the Blu-ray's audio transfer is lossless, that effectively makes it a better way for me to listen to Discovery, even if I do want to just listen and not watch.

In summary, if you can actually play it, there are two good reasons to buy this: A) You enjoy the film but the DVD only having lossy audio bothers you (whether you prefer the 5.1 or the stereo mix), or B) you want a less compressed digital copy of Discovery. (B may be less compelling if you own Discovery on LP and are satisfied with it; I don't own a turntable so I couldn't tell you.)

Horrible quality. It's just the DVD quality but stretched. Looks horrible. Do not get unless you're just collecting. If you want to purchase this to watch, I recommend the DVD.

Worst blu-ray I own. I think they just got the dvd master and put it on blu-ray. If you own the dvd, don't bother there is no difference, even that terrible menu from the dvd is still on here!

I really love this movie, and was looking forward to watching it in HD when they announced that they were going to release it on Blu-ray, but this does not deliver at all.

When you first hear about this, you can't imagine its going to be anything but horrifically prententious and doomed to failure.

The combination of Japanese anime and French House music seems like it should be a classic example of "chalk and cheese".

So what I love about this, is that despite all the trepidation I approached it with, this DVD delivered joy non-stop and left me recommending it to all my friends and vague acquaintances and random people at clubs.

I've been sold on the idea of the House Musical thanks to the highly entertaining music of Daft Punk as invisaged by the artistic genius of Leiji Matsumoto.

The film only has sparing sound effects, and to be honest I don't think these were really NEEDED. But the more important point is that they never detracted from the music.

The plot is easy to follow and somewhat surreal - an immortal record executive has been kidnapping musical geniuses from across the universe for centuries, and is trying to use the gold records they have collected to build some sort of device to enable his dreams of world domination.

So I imagine this is based on a true story.

Absolutely brilliant. This "House Musical" fuses the talents of legendary manga artist Leiji Matsumoto with one of the most inovatitve groups in music, Daft Punk.

The animation is fantastic, pulsing with vivid colours and imagery. Matsumoto's [the mastermind behind "Battleship Yamato" and "Captain Harlock"] world truly comes alive in a way no other animated piece ever has. Daft Punk has alot to do with this. The movie is set to pace with the Punk's "Discovery" release.

The story is fairly straight forward, Evil record executive steals an alien rock quartet and repackages them for Earth to make loads of money. Insert a starship pilot [ad devoted fan] to rescue the group and you've got a basic anime plot!

While the plot really isnt THAT important, the music and animation more than make up for the movie [which has no dialog]. If you're into anime, manga or the Daft duo you'll enjoy this movie immensely.
