Paul Motian – Waltz For Debby

Compared two vinyl rips on the same setup of this record and of the UHQR, levels exactly matched: The UHQR has definitely some eq going on. When you listen to the tape hiss on completely silent parts the Craft is sounding even and natural. The UHQR has a treble lift and a slight suck-out in the presence region. This is reflected in the music where cymbals are hyper-detailed and the piano a bit recessed. I'm pretty sure for the Craft Kevin Gray just did his job and for the UQHR he was asked to make it more detailed. Vinyl formulation may play a minor role here but the differences point to eq. Tonally I'd prefer a midway point between those records.

At first I thought this sounded decent, but compared to a Craft version it's a lot less convincing. To much surface noise, on 45 RPM this becomes quite hideous. Doesn't fit on a one LP, with 19 min. one a side...compressed and lacking detail...no numbered junk, but Audiophile? Don't make me laugh ;-)

I'm listening to it right now from a strategic outpost down the hall. I can almost hear the purple /pink whatever colour that is, wafting in the air. The music is in tune, unlike myself.

This is a very bright pressing, which is somewhat unsurprising for a japanese record. It can lack a bit of warmth and deepness that you’d find in 60s US pressings. You’d think LaFaro would be affected by this but since he likes playing on the upper-neck is not that much of an issue. Instead, there is just a kind of unproportionate boost of the mid-highs which can absolutely destroy the more intense brushes on the drums. Otherwise, I think it’s a great record. It’s an incredibly precise and detailed pressing, but if you’re looking for warmth, I’d probably go for something else.

Not bad overall for the price. Very quiet pressing, great music.

Like my other Bill Evans Trio Waxtime in Colour disc (Sunday At The Village Vanguard), this album was also a pleasure to play - clean, flat and musical. With this sort of music, you don't want any sonic issues. At the price I paid, I may be able to catch up with other classic albums.
