Adding (#) to a new artist when credit is unlinked

I should probably know this by now but I dont and I cant find the answer. I am adding a new artist to the DB with an "Other" credit. His name is John Regan but he is not one of the 6 in the db. So is the credit correctly entered as Other [Unproduced By] - John Regan (7) or just John Regan. If I use (7) I guess it would be incorrect when the next John Regan comes along, so im guessing that isnt right, but I just want to make sure. It could be said that not including the (7) might suggest he is the first guy.
Edit - I just discovered he has another credit on the record so I will be creating (7) anyway, but id still like to know for the next time. -

i think in these cases, when no link will be created, it is best to not include the enumeration to the name - like you said, eventually someone will create a linked credit for someone else who shares the same name and use that number. the number you add will become invalid/obsolete.
if you know for sure it isnt anyone already in the database though, you can make mention of that in the submission notes, so no one will confuse them for an existing artist, and if it ever gets linked, it wont be linked to any of the artists you confirmed to be different people. -

The standard, IIRC, is not to use numbers on unlinked credits. Of course, if there is a linked credit as well then adding the (7) is the right way to go. -

Ok, thank you both. I was surprised that it doesnt come up as often as you might think it would. Do not include a number (unless there is a linked credit) seems to make the most sense then, cheers. -

I don't know why, though - if/when the credit can be made linked, it'd help the process immensely. -

i thought so too, but:

that's right. when we search for "artist(#)", the uncredited one will not appear at results, so we'll make the addition as the unlinked would not exist.
so, not numbered artist for the unlinked credit & a note to distinguish that one from the others would be more appropriate imo.

Strange, it isn't in the guidelines, isn't is? -

IMHO it doesn't need to be.
If the credit is going to be an unlinked one, for whatever motive, then it won't have bearing on linked credits and is just entered as on release - per RSG 2.1.2. Names are entered as they appear on the release
If the credit is a linked credit, then RSG 2.4.1 comes into play anyway;
2.4.1. Different Artists with the same name -- For example, two artists named John B should be entered as "John B" and "John B (2)". The (2) is not part of the name but is used to distinguish the two artists. If you need to create a third, use (3) and so on. Never swap about the suffixes, once an artist is designated a numerical suffix, the artist must remain with that suffix. The suffix has no relation to popularity or historical order. -

Yes, but 2.4.1. doesn't explicit refer to linked credits / artists ... -

Quite right, but I was talking about artists who are already in the database. -

and andy will be adding the artist into the database as he discovered a second credit for them on the release, which will link, hence why he will add the (7) to the unlinked credit after all, to show they are the same person. -

Yeah that's what I did. Now that I look at it though it looks strange to have both a linked and unlinked credit for him on the same sub, so I should have put both credits on the same line and I will when I get on my desktop.

yes, you very well could have amalgamated the credits onto one line unless if the linked credit role is also shared by another person on the release.
