I hate to say this but I must… "Wow, no comments?" Yes, there, now I've said it. Especially because I'd say that this was my first encounter with Orbital. I'm not sure but I like to believe it to be so… No, it wasn't so because I my uncle brining 'The Box' single from the UK earlier that year because I asked for that. But later that year I recall seeing some MTV UK singles chart program and they played like 10 seconds clip of 'Satan' and that was it. I was like "what the hell was that"? Obsessed by a small clip of a monstrous tune I knew I had to get this. As it happened, even a small town record store managed to have the Disc One of three disc set (probably why this charted so high). Some time after that I was able to obtain the remaining two parts and the results were just stunning.
Even if I wasn't aware of it, the three discs include basically the best (or some of the best) Orbital songs as live versions. 'Satan' was the song that lured me into this and although it sounds dated and rather predictable nowadays, I still can hear what was so compelling on it that got me into Orbital. It's very raw and aggressive but it has a very trancey and danceable feeling to it.
I that 'Out The Somewhere' was just stunning back then. Really, it sounded like future music from outer space. I had no idea that anyone could do something like that and I I listened to the live version over and over again and at the end even more that I did 'Satan'.
The Disk Two was nice but what was the deal breaker was the Disk Three. 'Chime' and 'Impact'. Need I say more? I listened to it time after time after time and it was just sublime. It was way later that I started to realize that those were real dance music classics. And I was pleased that they were my early encounters with Orbital. Actually, I'm pleased with the fact that I was able to listen to them without knowing their place in dance music history.
Anyways, what do you want me to say any more. If you're older than me, you're like "meh, he's just a kid who jumped on the bandwagon". And if you're younger than me, you're like "Orbital, is that like one of the moons of Jupiter?" Lame and depressing. Perhaps this wasn't a landmark in Orbital discography but that doesn't mean it didn't change lives of young people back then.
