Edited 4 months agoGlenn's singing/humming is part of his art and tyding it up seems so not respectful, it puts Bach in the front other than Glenn.. it's like tidying up Van Gogh's brushwork up... :/ I don't own yet any copy of the album and I wonder, is that the case here?
I'm looking for a copy Glenn's singing still presents and a pressing which sounds overall clean and natural with less background noises (in a respectful way). Can someone please recommend between this pressing, or some specific original pressing from 1982, or even a cd's set (such as A state of wonder from 2002)? Thanks a lot! -
I compared with the original 1982 pressing, and this one sounds awfull : very noisy, I can barely hear Gould singing, the overall mastering is a disaster with dry highs, the piano is off center.
I bought it after reading the extatic comments on this page, and I strongly disagree : get a 1982 press, they are cheaper and far better than this one. You'll get a silent pressing, with more clarity, details and presence, and you'll hear Gould singing with more acuracy.
My 2 cts : Gould was very cautious with the recording, he stopped give concert so the recording was the only way to encounter the public. Between the the digital and the analog, he simply chose the best. If the tapes had a chance to sound better, this release is a complete disaster.

I’ve replaced this copy 3 times and still no luck. There are major distortions on both sides and even echo at the end of some tracks. The printing quality is good, it’s good packaging but the sound is awful. After trying 3 different copies I’ve asked for a refund.

Edited 3 years agoThis analog version sounds much more natural than the digital version. The counterpoint sections sound like three players at once. Seems like the happy buyers are Canadian (abecdarians, Alx331277, me)....

This release is somehow a mystery to me...I read mostly enthusiastic reviews about this release, I think even in the SHF the reviews were mostly positive. But every single copy of this I tried was distorted, noisy with loud clicks and had some weird echoing effects. The several copies I listened to were very far from beeing "audiophile" as d. Sony does not give me any answer to my emails. So this is one of the most dissatisfying releases I ever bought.

Edited 8 years agoGreat sounding reissue. Beautifully packaged and vinyl pressing is superb...no issues whatsoever.

I was expecting some spectacular sound after reading everything that's written on that hype sticker, however the record has a lot of pops and sounds annoyingly dirty. Plus, there are clearly some moments when the pieces start to play quiet on the background before they actually begin and that says a lot about the quality of the press. A disappointing release, although the cover is printed well and the record is really good-looking.
