Edited 2 years agoSo the copy I have sounds clean and strong throughout. I have a Technics 1200, Ortofon Concorde stylus, and powered Edifer shelf speakers. I am not experiencing any of the sound quality issues others have described. Has anyone ed NAR about the quality issues? They are usually pretty good about replacing if bought from them directly. Does anyone know which plant pressed the 2015 runs?

Bought two different copies - on both side F is totally distorted, abolute crap.
I had to buy two copies from the Kourosh 3xLP as well, at least the second copy was ok in that case. "Never again" would be a better label name...waste of money... -
Edited 4 years agoThis was one of those records I kept meaning to pick up but just never got around to until recently. Finally finished the inaugural spin, and here is some praise (denoted with a ++) and some criticism (denoted with a --).
++The music is fantastic and I'm certainly glad there is a reissue floating around out here now. I've never heard an original, but considering the fact that this was a small-press album to begin with (and probably wasn't the most hi-of-fi), I have no complaints.
--The records themselves are noisy right from the jump on the sealed copy I got. A cleaning will probably get rid of most of that, I think.
++ It's cool that they spread this across three discs instead of just cramming it all onto two discs, however....
-- I don't understand the reasoning for rearranging the track listing. After a cursory comparison between this one and the original double-vinyl, it doesn't seem like they were rearranged for the purposes of maximizing the room on 3 lps, but I could be wrong there (I'm not a mastering engineer).
-- No gatefold, just three discs in a single-pocket cover.
++ I got a card. I see some folks didn't. I don't really use codes but hey, they d it and it's there.
++ While it's cool that there are 56 pages of information and photos...
-- It's kind of a bummer that it's a "digital booklet." Guess I'll be using that code after all. I'm hoping it goes into detail about the technical side of this reissue, but we'll see. (The hype sticker indicates "restored from the original tapes," but that doesn't really tell us if it's AAA or not.)
In summary, it's great that this is out there without having to toss down several hundred on an original, and it sounds fine to me all things considered. However, it would have been nice if a label like Light in the Attic or Numero would have gotten to this one. Inexplicable tracklisting changes and scaled-down packaging, as well as an absence of physical liner notes, seem to do a disservice to the importance of this album (and its reissue). That said, if you're on the fence about this one, get it while you still can.

I thought I would make my own mind up and purchase the NAR 3LP Reissue.
Having just bought a new valve amp, which sounds incredible, I put Hoagey Carmichael on with excitement, hoping the tubes would bring out the warm fuzz of Abercrombie's guitar. The Stark Reality was, I thought my stylus was damaged. The pressing is terrible. Having read that this is Egon's favourite record, I genuinely thought it would have been done proper. It has no dynamics and sounds flat.
