How to totally gaff in every way a classic gem! You buy this awful Simon Harris meddled and badly tweaked offering at your ear's peril.
1. The original soundstage and true stereo image has been vastly narrowed to almost mono, the vocals centered, the backing is lack lustre and dull. (the only fault IF there is one with the original mix and release is a lack of bass oomph something that Gene and Barry would continue with again and again!)
The master mix has now been trashed and it sounds so dull, yes it has backing break and repeat loope, by removing the vocal tracks. That's no excuse however for wrecking this. I am amazed that anyone at Polygram in London paid and okayed Harris to do this abortion.
2. The Production Credit is wrong seriously wrong Oscar Williams had absolutely nothing, zippo to do with this track.
Don Altfeld and Robert Walker were also very much part of this 1973 session. Note the miss spelling of Don Altfeld to Atlseld.
3. The original sound recording was never and has never ever been made by Polygram (New York) in 1976, unless this is a brand new re-recording!!!! What Polygram and now UMG did do was acquire the rights when Columbia Inc ended their licencee. It;s really gut wrenching and makes the bile well up when these uncaring lawyer/ant merchant banking giants feel they can legally tamper and alter history and facts. The fact of the matter is, unless they can secure and destroy every copy of that original 1973 release from Prophecy and Columbia Inc then the truth and history is there>>>> what it does is leave Polygram/UMG with egg on their faces and tarnished egos. DON'T TELL LIES, don't meddle or tweak and then claim in print ORIGINAL VERSION.
This 12" IMHO only has curio value as an altered with mix and what could have been a great full and rich extended version with the Sax and keyboards deep and arguing from left and right not mush duophonically centered by Harris (maybe he's a Beach Boys fan !)
One final gramatical and factual correction its THE T H E Jackson Sisters!. I can;t who was label manager for Urban round at Sussex Place, but this was sonically bad.
Warning! This 12" has been heavily booted and re booted luckly the original Polygram Urban pressings are dead easy to spot as they were still coming from Phonogram at Walthamstow. Compare any pre 1978 Polydor, Vertigo, Philips, Chrysalis, Arista 12" pressing your 12" Urban should be the same in it's finish and pressing info, The only clue I will offer is the Dead Wax matrix ALL the boots are hand scribed and not machine lug stamped. Be aware.
OR just stick with the 180 degree wide soundstage and full group vocals 1973 originals.
