ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!! Imagine making this gem out of thin air at the time - or, now? Holds up in any era - yet - was a massive bleep tune and massive breaks tune and fully-legit all the way with no cringe. Top shelf choon for the ages.

Does anyone know where the "Yeahhh yaahhh" vocal is sampled from please?
I'm currently trying to track them all down. That's the last one (other than the sythns) -

Edited 6 years agoWas 16 when this dropped. Was a massive influence on many, artists & joe public alike; it's the OG mix for me, that break on a 24K system rocked the sh*t out of everyone. Hype lived up to it. The Base mix is also great, albeit less on the rave side & more breaks led. 'My first Memory' quite possibly influenced all to follow on WARP, reminds of Sweet Exorcist, NOW, LFO & Tricky Disco... Class early bleeps.

Edited 7 years agoFor me, this is one hundred times better than The Scientist's other underground anthem "The Exorcist". I think I probably liked that for about a month or two tops when it first came out, it eventually began to irritate the hell out of me with that tinny, over-used, shuffle break and BEYOND playful bleeps.. You know, much like that snotty, naughty kid back at school always shooting peas at everyone. Anyway, enough about that one...
For me, the Bee in comparison has stood the test of time with its more profound & darker bassline. The breaks used are simple but absolutely rock solid. Excellent arrangement. The flow just feels so natural. And the drops, synth/string/choir sweeps & melancholic, slightly trippy, tear-jerking, bittersweet melodies in the choruses, perhaps a little naive to some, are just glorious. P.S. I'll go for the original mix over any other version any day of the week.
For a trippy, playful, melancholic piece, check out "My First Memory". -
Edited 19 years agoThis little masterpiece is a perfect early incarnation of jungle, and an expertly produced one at that. The breaks and the bass sound very sharp and clear for the time (on both mixes of The Bee, with slight advantage for the original). Actually this track is an early example of the UK hardcore sound, but as it lacks the typical thick synth sounds and is arranged more spartanly, it already points towards jungle, alongside early Shut Up & Dance.
There's also an experimental twist to the sounds used. The theme sample in The Bee is a 'bee' sound probably out of one of The Scientist's synths. The recordings of a baby talking and crying are used to stunning effect on My First Memory; they fit in very well into this spherical, melancholy techno tune.
