Edited 5 years agoLet me tell you a story around the fireplace: musical tastes were way more a partisan thing before the 21st century. Rockers vs mods, punk vs disco, heavy vs new wave, emos vs techno heads. And when I say vs I mean also that now old fashion term of "urban tribes" where you had to belong to one style, adopt one kind of music, read the same authors and maybe enjoy other things in the privacy of your room.
Disco was liked by sunny house in the mid 90s - the DFA times would arrive in the 00s -and if there was something negative about the IDM era and the wonders of the cold techno from was that any incursion was not well seen. Actually one thing that defined the Gen X was the deattachment, which forced you not to express excessive enthusiasm or care about anything.
So I always considered "From Disco to Disco" a single from guys that only could enjoy disco ironically, like a friend you bring to a festival because he is a fan of whatever rock band and hates electronica and finds himself jumping at 2AM at Chvrches but telling you all the time that this music is shit and superficial. The guys being or faking being high in the background of a very catchy melody are 100% that, like the electroclash singers that forced themselves to sing out of tune (that happened shortly after). This one was played, over and over, in the same bars that played Adult., Client, Fischerspooner, and their referents. You could never play Chic in the same place as you were playing OMD, and "From Disco to Disco" sounds like that.
And irritating as it is, it is so catchy. The hooks are there and are fantastic. -
