The first album By Laurent Garnier turn out to be one of his few decent releases. its not exactly an outstanding album but is surely enjoyable. "Rex attitude" is the only track i don´t like, very agressive and repetitive...while "Raw cut" turns out to be my favourite music, as the music progresses a shadowy melody gets stronger making the last minute of this music lovely.

Laurent Garnier's first album on his own F Communications, Shot in the Dark, is chock full of straight-up techno. Too bad it doesn't start well. "Shapes Under Water" is pointlessly aggressive and doesn't leave any impression. "Astral Dreams" is even worse due to its repetitiveness and predictability, cheaply turning up the harsh synth slowly. Unfortunately, there are more of such tracks, like "Rex Attitude". Garnier succeeds nevertheless on the driving "Bouncing Metal" and "Raw Cut", twisting the tracks somewhat midway to keep them interesting. However, "The Force" combines a decent groove with some very deceptive and irritating vocal samples, while the rough "Geometric World" touches on the boundary of my definition of being music. Much better is the title-impliying "Harmonic Groove", which has a nice breakdown at the four minute mark. "Track for Mike" goes for dissonant electronics, not being that interesting. One of the best tracks is "Rising Spirit". An explicitly ambient track with a mellow beat, building up the synths on the background to show their grace and fading them out towards the end. "022" is very good too, an elegant deep house track that keeps its neat melody going, as if you are floating in the air. While Garnier delivers eleven tracks, only half of them are worthwhile.
