More than worth the price of ission to get a perfect master of the FULL version of "She spoke...". The rest of the songs are solid too.
Regardless of whether these songs had made it out to us previously as bootlegs, the mastering/sound on this cd quality makes that point moot. -
Edited 19 years agoAs the name implies, this collection is a set of "Old Friends" or as Prince often calls the songs he writes, his children. From the sullen look on his face on the cover to the selection of material - all downbeat and mostly negative toned material - its clear that Prince was releasing these simply to fulfill his contract with Warner Bros. In typical Prince fashion, he chose songs that were for the most part widely available on bootleg - not that he necessarily condoned bootlegs but at least in this manner he knew his most loyal of fans wouldn't buy the disc because a) they didn't want to give the money to Warner and b) they already had copies of the songs, even if only on bootleg. Strangely, the one song that did make into the compilation was "5 Women" - a song Prince wrote for Joe Cocker and which Cocker included on his 1992 album "Night Calls" - strange because this is one of the few songs that was sought after by many a Prince fan but (at the time) was very hard to acquire. Given that, its almost made "The Vault" a catch-22 for die-hard Prince fans - damned if they buy it and give the cash to WB and damned if they don't missing out on "5 Women," something they had been trying to get for years...
