Notes
Yellow Magic Orchestra's second studio album. Released with obi strip and printed inner sleeve. This is the 3rd vinyl version.
1st Version: Yellow (transparent) vinyl with red labels used on all Alfa records (except special variants) from 1978 to early 1980, features a red obi strip which mentions the yellow vinyl.
[All subsequent versions are in standard black vinyl.]
2nd Version: Red obi strip from the first version but without the mention of the yellow vinyl, red labels on vinyl. Used until around November 1979.
3rd Version: Yellow obi strip, red labels on vinyl. Made sometime between November 1979 - February 1980.
4th Version: Different red obi strip, red labels on vinyl. Made for the release of the group's live album Public Pressure, which is promoted on the back of the obi strip.
5th Version: Red obi strip #2, now with gradient labels used on all Alfa records (except special variants) from early 1980 to early 1981. There was a later variant of the obi strip that added the catalog numbers for the cassette versions of the promoted albums in addition to Solid State Survivor's, with an image of its cassette cover design. In addition, some copies of this pressing have a hype sticker stating that the album won an industry award.
6th Version: Red obi strip #2 with final mention of Victor Musical Industries as the distributor, now with white/beige labels used on all Alfa records (except special variants) since early 1981.
7th Version: Red obi #2 with mention of Warner-Pioneer Corporation as the new distributor after the rights transferred in 1983. The white/beige labels are carried over from the previous version, but the vinyl is re-cut at a slightly different rate.
Versions 1-6 were manufactured by Victor, and the black vinyl versions used a unique formula in which the record becomes semi-transparent when you hold it up to a source of light. Warner pressings are fully opaque.

Perfect pressing of a near-perfect album. These three incredible musicians were all working on overtime making this record. You can tell it was a labor of love, but also having fun in the studio and making use of the new tech of the time.
Each of the three going on to have long and impressive careers of their own makes this one of the most important records in Japanese music history. Certainly this album bubbles with a sense of immaturity, especially given the overall context of the masterpieces Hosono and Sakamoto would go on to create, but it’s nevertheless a beyond enjoyable time. That thumping bassline on this the first track has been stuck in my head for a week, and I couldn’t care less! -
A note about the different Japanese LP pressings that all have the same catalogue number (ALR 6022): There are 5 known versions, not including likely promotional/sample copies -
1st version - yellow vinyl record and red obi noting that. Red labels.
2nd version - black vinyl record, red labels and similar red obi as the first pressing, but without the text referring to coloured vinyl (as of 13/10/2010 this one has not been submitted to Discogs).
3rd version - black vinyl record, yellow obi strip.
4th version (1980) - black vinyl, gradiated pink/purple labels, different red obi strip.
- versions 1 - 4 are manufactured by Victor (this is noted on the obi strip in Japanese and in English in very small print on the record labels)
5th version (1983)- black vinyl, light beige labels, same red obi strip as the 4th version and notation in Japanese that the record is pressed by Warner-Pioneer. As of 13/11/2010 this has not yet been submitted to Discogs.
