Edited 2 years agoToxygene which was originally meant as a remix of Jean Michel Jarre's 'Oxygene 8', JMJ was not fond of the version since it only contained some fragments of the original. Dr Alex Patterson wasn't having any of it and slagged off JMJ in the music press and took his production, released the remix as his own track and cheekily called it Toxygene.
Anyhow, the Original (& Toxic Genes) version(s) is quite the stomper, even for its tempo at 110. You have the characteristic wide soundscapes filled with various samples & sounds gathered up from the Patterson audio library.
Fila Brazilia does a chunky breaks interpretation which is quite groovy. Kris Needs goes for his usual hard acid techno direction and uses the original sounds quite sparsely. Way Out West creates a hard yet proggy tech-trancer using a lot of the original sounds to good use. This remix sounds as fresh today, 10 years on after it was released and it still finds a spot in most of my sets.
