Edited 3 months agoThis 4xLP 45rpm pressing is incredible sounding - BUT - buyers should realize that this, and the other Genesis Atlantic 75 pressings are made from high resolution digital masters of the REMIXED versions.
The reason that many "classic rock" bands issue remixed versions of their albums is not because there was anything "wrong" with the original mixes - but it allows the bands to now own the masters of these albums, where in the past it was the record company who owned their masters.
All in all, this and the other Genesis albums in this series sound so good, and by my now I've gotten accustomed to these remixes. And it is the same great material! Buy them all! -
Haven’t bought this yet, but was wondering if anyone compared this to the 180g classic records version?

Prefer the Porky UK 2nd (no hum). It’s brighter and livelier, more 3D and the bass has more clarity. The 45RPM sounds open, with perhaps more separation, but also a little sterile and less “sparkle” in comparison and the bass lacks clarity, which is perhaps the biggest issue for me. The original flows better due to lack of side flips. But pretty decent overall.

I was glad to flip my copy as the break up of songs is just horrid. This was a HUGE mistake on AP's part to cut at 45rpm. Even the double lp is frustrating to lesser degree. The SACD should be the definitive version and lets hope it comes soon!

The Lamb has never sounded better than this. Detailed and in-yer-face sounding. Phenomenal packaging. Highly recommended!

In my humble opinion, Analogue Productions makes the biggest attack that this LP has suffered. By insisting on 45rpm they made the most horrible cuts between songs I have ever heard. -
Terrific album and my recently ordered copy arrived today, March 25th, number 1664. There are no issues with mine, all flat or mostly flat, with no clicks so I am very pleased. I have the balance of the Genesis titles from the Atlantic 75th on preorder but it is quite a wait until Nov 8th when Nursery Chryme comes out, followed by Foxtrot and Trick of the Tail on Dec 13th.

Edited one year agoAnalogue Productions did an amazing job on the packaging on this album.
However, the pressing quality wasn't fantastic. In the quiet bits on all 8 sides I could often hear a lot of noise or pops/clicks. Side 8 was really bad.
In of mastering I have no complaints - exceptional clarity and dynamics.
But as a listening experience I did not enjoy the 45 RPM format. 8 sides is just too much.
Probably the SACD will be more to my liking. -
Edited one year agoThis is still technically a catalog item, it’s just backordered and probably waiting for more copies. Don’t feed the flippers, exercise some discipline and wait for the $120 list price.

Edited 3 months agoJust wow - such an improvement over my OG Atco and half-speed remaster of the Nick Davis mix (which to my ears is indeed as bad as audiophiles make it out to be whencomparinf it to the subject pressing).
Some immediate impressions:
- definitely vocal forward but a nice balanced soundstage with the ing instruments
-As opposed to the half-speed remaster which to my ears had too much low-end, this mix is noticeably brighter without being shrill. It's certainly much clearer with a preference for mid frequencies.
But that being said there are some wonderful moments when the low-end hits you like a sledgehammer (drum & bass drop in "fly on a windshield" or the quarter note pulses on "Back in NYC").
Also if I compare this with the other recent SEBTP 45 RPM remaster I would even say this set has a stronger ND more persistent low-end response.
The amazing clarity helps to really accentuate certain ages which for years I could never clearly make out (bass drum patterns during the "rain drops keeping falling" section of In the Cage or Peter Gabriel yelling "Move over Casanova" during Counting out time").
The bedlam of "The Grand Parade..." is managed exceptionally well, with a nicely centered stereo image, that unpacks the instrumental clutter and enables the recording details to reveal themselves.
While this is an exceptionally quiet album there are a few sections of excessive popping (the intro to "Hairless Heart" being an egregious example which to the presssing's credit more than makes up for it once all the instruments kick in). Also, given this is transforming a 2 LP set into 4 discs there will inevitably be some gaps between songs not present during the initial release (looking at you Anyway / Here Comes the Supernatural)
Really though these are very small quibbles and don't really detract from the overall impression of the disc.
The packaging is gorgeous and ingeniously planned. It feels and reads like an over-sized novel which is certainly appropriate given the density of the lyrical and musical themes at play.
Yes this is an expensive release ($220 CAD), but to me was worth every penny, especially given the many challenges in making this release audiophile quality over the years. It will certainly be my reference copy for years to come. I can't wait to listen to it many more in the coming years and can't possibly imagine any meaningful improvement to this, my favorite album of all-time.
Bravo Analogue Productions.! A+
