Buy this just for Micheal Manrings bass playing. Nonetheless this is classic Windham Hill when the label was at their apex releasing Mark Isham, William Ackerman, Alex de Grassi, Schoenhertz & Scott, Shadowfax (a band every lover of eclectic world music should know of!) etc.
The debut release is a mix of styles drawing influences of course from bluegrass, jazz, world music care of Andy Narrells steel pans) as well as a bit of classical and new age (that non-genre style of instrumental music).
A nice variation of uplifting and quieter more pensive compositions are well . The recording fidelity of at least the labels cd releases should be held high up there in the pantheon of labels like ECM. My guess the owners of Windham Hill spared no expensive with studio time and equipment and these recordings are testament to the labels vision.
A shame it WH was sold and by the time the 90s rolled the cold icy shoulders of grunge and mainstream techno reared their heads forcing the label to completely loose its primary focus which was unique accessible new acoustic and contemporary instrumental music. At least theres a nice back catalog worthy of exploring.
