Edited one year agoI sort of get what Lauryn was 'trying' to do on her long-awaited solo debut. Problem is, Michael Franti (Spearhead) and Meshell Ndegeocello have already "been there-done that" several times over with far superior results to back it up on their end. I still distinctly buying 2 CD copies of this album in a desperate attempt to understand why it was considered one of the best ever made by critics and industry insiders around the time it was released. Both times I ended up EXTREMELY disappointed (more like "pissed off" actually, lol) and ultimately traded them in for basically nothing in return. It was right at that very moment I finally learned that hype and quality don't always go hand-in-hand, especially when it comes to the mainstream music scene nowadays...

Edited 8 years agoSuperb Album! Lots of groove !! Still very good to here today. Some talking around here and there.. but if you take that out... I love it! Superbe Album ! Belle groove !!! Encore très bon aujourd'hui. Un peu de placotages par -ci, par-la ..qui casse un peu le rytme .. mais sinon j'adore ! Scusez mon francais. - Superb Album! Still very good to here today. Some talking around here and there.. but apart from that I love it!

Is this going to be my own feeling on how the record is or the greatest that this album had on the recording business. Could this be the link between the Janet Jackson of the eighties with a hint of Queen Latifah to the Beyonce that we know today? That India Arie and Erikha Badu that came afterwards, a mix of soul with pop thrown in it. All comes through in this album, listen to Ex-Factor, Everything Is Everything, and the amazingly Doo Wop (That Thing), it blends so many styles into what is mainstream. I know it takes from Motown and what we only think that is as a distant sound from memory but makes it fresh and still listenable today
