not a jazz aficionado but just sticking with my first listen impression this is excellent. it has continuous life and love expressing through every performer on every track. i'm definitely not a purist in how i view jazz or any musical style so i take it as it is and this is immediate and of the moment as i listen to it today. interesting to note this was recorded in 1970 even though released in 1974 -- a wide gap in of what was happening in jazz through those years. glad i have it to play in 2025. -
Although recorded for and initially released on Blue Note, Asante is clearly in the mold of much of McCoy's Milestone output. McCoy released some of his most fascinating, adventurous and exuberant pieces during the 70s. This album is little bit of a departure in of its instrumentation ( but then McCoy did very much experimenting on those 70s LPs ). Vocalist, Songai Sandra Smith and guitarist, Ted Dunbar are the guest. This definitely gets repeated play

Album is pretty hit or miss for me. There are some great moments, "Malika" for example, but towards the end of the album ("Fulfillment") things tend to digress. Worth picking up but I'd be surprised if it continuously gets repeated play
