"Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce you? The Dutch Rhythm Combo!" -there´s possibly no gentler start for a track or a record info. But it´s the ideal start for the debut EP by a big new hope from Pulver Records: The Dutch Rhythm Combo. Though the gentle plea for attention wouldn´t necessary be needed considering the four outstanding tracks of the Dutch Rhythm Combo EP "Go Dutch!". As soon as the listener has heard the first sounds, one immediately asks "What kind of music is this?" and "Who did it?" Like with almost all good music, the sound of the Dutch Rhythm Combo can´t be precisely categorized. One can roughly locate it in a sound spectrum that spans genres like dub, jazz, hip hop, disco or dancehall which get freshly flavoured with the Dutch Rhythm Combo spice.
Have a listen at "Come On", the opener track of the EP with it´s deep, atmospheric noise sounds, virtuosly
reworked jazz drums and the eroticizing singing of Berlin´s Annik which debuts on "Come On" with her great voice: "I want you by my side....", a plea which one can hardly resist. The same with the Max's Re-fresh-Mix, that Max Fresh from Zurich, one half of Drum n´Bass legend Hidden Agenda and boss of the great Zest label put together from “Come On”. A subsonic bass, bouncing drums, a sexy shining darkness added to Annik's voice – these are future breakbeats de luxe.Or take "Bump Up The Jam", the tune where the "B" in "Bump" is not a mispelling but a signifier for the booty-ness of the wild and manic groove that has an afro-dancehall flavour which instantly shakes hips and booties. And finally "Go Dutch!, which is a marvellous downtempo disco loader that rounds up the wide musical spectrum of the Dutch Rhythm Combo with a groovy beat.
Though the music of the Dutch Rhythm Combo has a proper live feeling and one could easily assume that the tracks on this EP emerged out of long jam sessions of a real band or combo, there´s actually only one person that created all its music: Felix Haaksman. The term "Rhythm" in the name of his project naturally comes from the manic and percussive grooves he produces and plays. The prefix "Dutch" relates to the biographic roots of Berlin based DJ and producer Felix Haaksman, who´s family comes from the land of windmills and gouda cheese and which Felix is very specially related to.
