Sonically this is one of the best sounding records in my collection, even amongst all the remastered, MoFi, SACD's, and Half-Speed Masters. There's just something about Steve Nye's mix that is lush and deep. David's voice sounds like he's in the room with you, and things like Nelson's acoustic guitar and Steve Jansen's percussion are beautifully present. And of course the music is some of David's best IMO.

Remarkable how timeless this album sounds. It would be difficult to date if you were hearing it for first time. Beautifully crafted songs with considered lyrics about love faith and spiritual longing, it's easily Sylvian's finest release. The instrumental side is just as lovely with contributions from notable musicians such as BJ Nelson and Robert Fripp. Music for contemplation

For me ‘Secrets...’ is David Sylvian’s crowning glory. A record that he could never really better. But this and Brilliant Trees are the other two in the triptych I would want to own if I didn’t have them. Both have a keen experimental edge welded to great songs and both also have that ambient side he was fond of back then. I would also add the ‘preparations for a journey’ mini album to this group and for me these are his best works. Full of hope, optimism, strangeness and beauty.
A golden era of his songwriting and sonic art that should be cherished. True beauty is hard to come by these days. These albums represent a good place to start, dive in the water is lovely.... -
I have been listening a lot to these vinyls lately. The original vinyls from this one through to Flux & Mutability were not great pressings and suffered because of it. The sound stage on the originals compared to the new ones is something else though and a real shame they were not pressed with love and placed in polylined Virgin inner bags to protect them from the plant to our hands. The new pressing are roughly done with all kinds of dirt, pressing label glue on them, which does not help the sound on these at all, they deserve a better pressing quality, as the music/sound is exceptional. The new pressings sound different to the originals down to vinyl weight. The CDs don't even sound close to either vinyl pressed.....

Edited 6 years agoWhy Oh Why did they not half speed remaster these as with the Japan albums? I'm so disappointed in the sound. This is an amazing sounding album that should be showcased at it's best. Maybe one day then . . .

I never understood why the 2 CDs were never released as one 80 minutes CD. All you have to do is remove the silence between the Disc 2 instrumental tracks and it's 80 mins total. But the vinyl still sounds best.

When I die I wish to have someone place a copy of this album into my coffin so it can guide me throughout the stars forever.
