The Cure - “Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me” (Elektra 1987)
After the success of 1985’s “The Head In The Door”, Robert Smith and company really ramped it up with their 7th and most ambitious album up to that point. A double album of 18 outstanding tracks that begins with a panicked wah-wah guitar solo intro that reaches blistering heights during the 6 minute plus “The Kiss” and never lets up until final exasperated punches and blows from the album closer “Fight”! The album weaves in and out of so many moods from the beautiful gentleness of songs like “Catch” and “Just Like Heaven” to the sinister middle Eastern influences of “If Only Tonight We Could Sleep” and “The Snakepit” back to unabashed flirty sexy-pop on “Why Can’t I Be You?” and “Hot! Hot! Hot!”. If that wasn’t enough, The Cure even reaches into prog-rock territory with “Like Cockatoos” with its unorthodox song structure that verges on King Crimson-like brilliance! This album solidified The Cure’s creative plateau that would continue on for 1989’s dark classic “Disintegration” and 1992’s excellent “Wish”. Even all of their B-sides from this era were nearly flawless! I’ll never forget seeing the opening night show for “The Kiss Tour” at Vancouver’s Expo Theatre (rip) that was simply mind blowing and one of the best shows I’ve ever seen! This is an original Canadian pressing DMM mastering with ‘Townhouse’ scribed in the deadwax and it sounds phenomenal. Essential music!
