Edited 20 years agoMade at the times when the artists really managed to conceive their music with real artistic spirit, this electronic-Soul tune definitely goes on a romantic approach. There's a kind of a nostalgic atmosphere on the age "After all that we've been through/Time won't change the way I feel about you", concluded by the theme of the tune itself ("Out of all the loves before/You're the finest I'll ever know! (backing vocals) Finest I ever!"). The lyrics tells the story about someone still deeply in Love, but lost by a probable separation - a love that would have no substitute, just because it was "the finest".

"The Finest" was a minor pop hit in the U.S. but an instant classic at U.S. R&B radio, later becoming the #1 R&B song for 1986 (per Billboard magazine)... and many years later enjoyed a revival as the hook in Silverstone's "If I Had A Choice."
