Funny how the production on the '60s records sounds so timeless and yet the job they did on Dylan's '80s records sounds so old-fashioned and dated.
Slightly off-topic, but someone I knew who knew Gene Clark well said that he (Gene) wanted to make records that sounded like Springsteen's Born In The USA: "maybe that'll work" he mused (ie, it might sell records). My friend laughed and said "you're joking, surely", but Gene was sincere. Those drums, that keyboard sound..... ugh. Same thing happened here, except Dylan got his way. -
Bob Dylan with Shoulder Pads...The opening tracks OK but I wish he'd stuck with a solid group and left the synthesised drum sound well alone. It's all a bit Phil Collins, sounds like it's from a soundtrack to some cheesy 80's American Show and it's not just the speak and spell backing music, the lyrics fall down too. I just can't connect to this,
