Edited 3 years agoI'm a bit puzzled about the two versions of The Girl with The Patent Leather Face. On more than one occasion I read that Daniel Miller produced the original version that came out on the Some Bizzare album. The most recent example is the great article / interview about 40th anniversary of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret published by TheQuietus.com, where Daniel himself says that before producing Memorabilia they did TGWTPLF. Curiously enough, neither this release nor the Some Bizzare album mention Daniel's involvement. I tend to think that the demo version featured on the 5th CD is actually the Daniel Miller version. It sounds more like a later recording and to me sounds totally in line with the other five songs recorded with Daniel and seemingly features the same drum machine (Korg KR-55?)

Edited 4 years agoI thought buying this box set was going to get me closer to rare, unreleased tracks and different versions. This was only the tip of the ice berg. Those features are great but the best part of this box set is are the live versions, the things Marc Almond says and furthermost realizing the effort they put into the live concerts from Marcs voice live to the instrumentation and not skimping on anything live. The commentary is awesome. Listen to the live Discs. To think he put that much energy every night on his vocals being that great but so infamous and under paid for his true talent is amazing.

Edited 5 years ago3:50 Insecure Me Disc 8 Track 7 Live "A very heavy smell of amyl nitrate around, Come on, who's got the bottle?" Priceless!!!
-
In an age of pointlessly re-hashed discographies, re-packaged trash, and "remastered" travesties being rushed to market to wring every last cent out of generational nostalgia, this collection stands as an exception. Impressively deep and wide-ranging across the Soft Cell catalogue, it's packed with both classics and truly rare treasures. As a retrospective, it excels in illuminating areas of Soft Cell's career that were left out of the charts and have been little more than fan lore circulated via bootleg tapes (...and then CDs...and then MP3s, etc) for decades. Genuine value for money!!
