This CD’s a lot of fun for car rides, but at home it leaves a lot to be desired. If you’re like me and most of your Miles collection is on LP, then switching to this cd in the middle of an electric kick just isn’t going to do it. The sound just wasn’t very pleasing and left me feeling fatigued about halfway through the first cd. It sounds heavily compressed to the point where the cymbals get pulled down every time there’s a deep rhythmic pulse, which, if you know this music, is all the time. If you find a copy on the cheap or just want a beater copy for car rides by all means, it’s a good time, just don’t expect sonic bliss at home. I know this music was never exactly hi fi to begin with but the difference between this and my other electric Miles on vinyl is jarring. I was starting to worry that maybe I needed a better CD player or that the sound of CDs was lame to me, but my “Big Fun” double cd with the bonus tracks sounds much nicer than this. I’m happy to have that and have always enjoyed it. I should hopefully be receiving a Japanese 3rd pressing of Dark Magus soon to compare.
